Baking for Change!

By Samantha Rudy

DSCN1441  "Have a Heart Do Your Part" has been heard every February for the past 13 years. The radio station 98.1 holds a radio-thon in order to earn money for the Akron Children's Hospital. This year our students from the Dalton Intermediate School (DIS) Learning Center became what the hospital calls "Change Bandits".

"I wanted them to earn the money" says Mrs. Agnes Moran the teacher aide at the DIS Learning Center.  The "Change Bandits" decided to have a bake sale which Mrs. Moran also used as a  math/money activity.

The students made brownies, rice crispy treats, and popcorn in their classrooms kitchen with the help of a parent, Mrs. Terri Fogel and Mrs. Moran. They also had muffins and cookies available for sale.

The students worked hard to get everything ready for their bake sale which was held on January 25th. "They felt wonderful helping the hospital" said Mrs. Moran. And by the end of the sale the students had raised $76.81. The students had all been to the hospital as patients, so raising this money was very important for them.

Mrs. Moran would also like to thank all the people involved with the bake sale and her students for doing such a great job. She also says "it truly was a great day filled with happiness and a great way to show love to others".

The radio-thon so far this year has brought in $663,865.98 for the children at the hospital. If you would like to do your part you can call 1-866-543-0981 to donate over the phone or log onto www.wkdd.com to donate online.

Congrats DIS Learning Center you did a great job!!
